“Why blend in when you were born to stand out?” Dr. Seuss

Entertaining family and friends in a functional space inspired a kitchen renovation that would combine love of color with a lighthearted yet utilitarian aesthetic. Favorite children’s author Dr. Seuss and his whimsical illustrations were the influence for this stand-out space.

Too small for both cooks, the original kitchen was dark, drab and crowded. The confined small footprint proved the greatest challenge. Re-imagining the floor plan, the wall between the dining and living areas was removed, then flip-flopped allowing the dining area to become an extension of the kitchen.

Storage space was maximized by adding cabinetry to the peninsula and range wall. The peninsula now houses dual-sided cabinets with pull-out shelves. Floating shelves replaced upper cabinets and soffits adding more visual space and openness to the room.

A dry bar with more open shelving was added to the dining area. It contains a wine cooler and now serves as a bar and serving area.

Vibrant blueberry-colored cabinets contrast with classic-white subway tiles and Carrera quartz countertops. Richly stained shelves balance the bold blue resulting in a balanced and cohesive look offset by darkened refinished floors.

Shades of blue and grey bubble tiles were meticulously chosen and strategically placed in a free-floating pattern above the range. A stand-alone range hood framed by creative tile art is the kitchen focal point, drawing attention up to the floating shelves and offering a feeling of movement and openness.

A farm sink and striking polished-nickel faucet sit below a picture frame of solid blue and grey circular tile. The round clear glass light fixture provides task lighting without detracting from the tile.

With a creative palette of bold and neutral color, the new kitchen is open and up-lifting. It represents the people who live there and is now the ideal stand-out entertaining space.
